Single Vineyard Series
2014 Hart & Hunter Oakey Creek Semillon
2016 has given us the most beautiful and refined Semillons, after being salvaged from the weather. After a much drier than normal spring in 2015, we saw significant rain events fall through November, December and January. And then it stopped. We picked our first parcel of white on the 19th January, with all the reds in by the 23rd February, so a very fast and furious vintage.
Provenance & Winemaking
Our sixth year in taking fruit from this iconic vineyard has again shown us what it can do, even when there are weather events beyond our control. The vineyard has maintained the rage so to speak and the old vines have stood up and delivered a top notch crop. There isn’t much that we change on a yearly basis as to the making of this product, we have found what works and gives us the best results, and as it is such a small parcel of fruit we don’t feel the need for any experimentation here. Destem and cold settling in stainless steel, inoculation with a neutral yeast, we run the ferments cold and slow, then filter and bottle early to capture the vibrancy of the wine
The Oakey Creek is the most delicate of our Semillons, with very distinctive vineyard characteristics that reveal themselves each year regardless of the weather conditions. Pale green in the glass the wine has that classic Semillon nose of lime rind, lemongrass and talc. On the palate the wine is rich and alluring, yet elegant, with a lovey persistence of floral blossom, lemon and the hint of flinty stone giving it drive and length in the mouth
We are enjoying the Oakey Creek with seared tuna and Chinese greens.
Drink now, but will reward careful cellaring for 7+ years .
