Single Vineyard Series
2016 Hart & Hunter Twenty Six Rows Chardonnay
Provenance & Vinification
This next release of our Twenty Six Rows Chardonnay has been inspired by a parcel of fruit from one of the Hunter Valleys most iconic vineyards going back some 30 years, the De Bortoli Vineyard, located at the gateway to Pokolbin.
We harvested on the 21st January 2016, with a second smaller pick a week later. The vintage conditions were a little tricky in 16’ but the wines produced have structure, elegance and fantastic palate weight. We crushed and pressed the fruit, with a portion sent directly to oak for natural wilde ferment, while the remainder was settled, then racked after 48 hours. A portion of this wine was fermented in stainless steel, whilst the balance went to a mix of old and new oak barrels, for approximately
8 months. Wilde ferment and heavy solids have given this wine great
concentration of flavour and texture.
The TSR Chardonnay is showing some funk this year. Whilst there is a purity to the fruit from the vineyard, we have managed to incorporate a little funk and roll this year, which was not entirely planned but we are excited by the result. The nose is showing lovely peach and mealy characters, along with cashew nut and a flinty component. The palate is bright and somewhat textural with lovely citrus drive and acidity, cheeky tropical characters complemented by a touch of vanillin oak.
We are drinking the TSR with fresh sashimi, pickled ginger and wasabi.
A beautiful drink now, but this vintage should see 7+ years
