Single Vineyard Series
Hart & Hunter was formed around the idea of sourcing the best parcels of fruit from the best possible vineyard sites to make a Single Vineyard Wine. Our fruit has come from some amazing parcels of land in Pokolbin that year after year turn out incredible wines truly indicative of their terroir. Our aim is to always credit the wine to the vineyard, to let it stand on its own. Lifted primary fruit, tannin structure and fresh natural acidity form the backbone of our wines.
Oakey Creek Semillon
Coordinates 32.807 ̊S 151.297 ̊E
Our Single Vineyard Semillon has come from the old vine patch in Draytons Vineyard on Oakey Creek Road. The vineyard is home to fifty year old vines with plantings on sandy loam running adjacent to the alluvial creek bed. This vineyard exhibits a unique and beautiful chalky minerality, that captured our eye as early on as 2004, whilst both working for other well-known Hunter producers. We lept at the chance to source our own fruit from here in 2010, which turned into an impressive first release wine going on to win two trophies at the 2010 Hunter Valley Wine Show, prior to its release. The Semillon traditionally exhibits delicate mineral characters so adored by Semillon lovers, and produces a wine that is sure to age gracefully for many years.
The Remparts Semillon
Coordinates 32.765 ̊S 151.256 ̊E
Our first release of The Remparts Semillon in 2013, is sourced from the Noble Domain vineyard off Broke Road. The vineyard is approximately
3 acres which sits back 100m or so from Broke Road. The vineyard is surrounded and protected by dense scrubland. Plantings are on sandy loam, run east-west and are approximately 25 years old. We stumbled onto the vineyard in 2012, and whilst walking through it sampling fruit, we discovered the end posts all had little brass plates. They seem to bear names of families who had helped to plant or prune the vineyard at some point over the years.
One that caught our eye had an engraving of a couple hugging and was called the Remparts. We liked it immediately, and for us, it’s our romantic link to families getting together and helping each other out, shoring up a future together and producing quality fruit and a product they can be proud of. We hope you enjoy it.
Twenty Six Rows Chardonnay
Coordinates 32.775 ̊S 151.342 ̊E
The Twenty Six Rows Chardonnay is sourced from an iconic Hunter Vineyard - across the road from the Pokolbin airport sits the DeBortoli vineyard where the Chardonnay patch sits front and centre in the block. Grown on loam soils with a heavy chalky mineral deposit on the surface, the vineyard is approximately 30 years old producing tiny bunches of gorgeous fruit. We try to maximise the natural yeasts from the vineyard for fermentation combined with barrel stirring, which produces a wine full of body and flavour, and is both graceful yet has something to say.
Coordinates 32.807 ̊S 151.322 ̊E
The Ablington Shiraz is from the Ablington Vineyard on O’Connors Lane in Pokolbin. Planted on a gentle rolling slope with an easterly aspect, this vineyard exhibits a lovely subtlety in the fruit it produces, very reminiscent of the old school Hunter burgundies. Medium bodied in weight, with soft but structural tannins, a fleshy mid palate and cherry red fruits. A great young drink, but as our first release of this wine in 2009, now five years in the bottle is showing, beautiful ageing potential whilst maintaining its vibrancy.
The Hill Shiraz
Coordinates 32.765 ̊S 151.263 ̊E
The Hill for us, is made to represent the pinnacle, the best of the best.
A small bottling of the best barrels from the best Single Vineyard in years that warrant such a wine. In 2011 a slight shift for the Phat Wine Co, with fruit sourced from The Hill Vineyard, located on a famous old piece of Hunter dirt on Broke Road. This new wine is from the western end of Pokolbin, practically across the road from The Remparts. A fairly exposed side of the hill facing south, small old vines at least 50 years old, and producing tiny berries and small crops, but packed full of flavour and offering a textural more weighty Semillon.
Our first reserve bottling from the outstanding 2011 vintage, has produced a wine that is elegant, fruit driven, with tight acid and tannin structure, and a powerful finish.A great ageing option.
